Hazardous Waste Disposal in Sonoma County
Where to take chemicals, batteries, and pesticides safely.
You are cleaning out the shed. You find old weed killer, motor oil, and pool chemicals. These items are toxic. They cannot go in the trash. They cannot go down the drain.
What is Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)?
If it is flammable, corrosive, toxic, or reactive, it is hazardous. This includes paint thinner, pesticides, car batteries, fluorescent tubes, and old gasoline.
The HHW Facility
Sonoma County has a dedicated Household Hazardous Waste facility at the Central Disposal Site on Mecham Road. It is free for residential drop-offs. They are usually open Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. You drive up, pop the trunk, and they unload it for you.
Community Drop-Off Events
If you don't want to drive to Petaluma, Zero Waste Sonoma hosts HHW collection events in different cities every week. You must make an appointment online. They come to Santa Rosa, Windsor, Sonoma, and other towns on a rotating schedule.
Batteries and Bulbs
Many hardware stores accept household batteries and fluorescent bulbs. Check your local Friedman's or Ace Hardware.
What We Can and Cannot Take
As a junk removal service, we are legally prohibited from transporting hazardous waste. If you hire us for a garage cleanout, we will haul the boxes, the old tools, and the broken lawnmower. But we will have to leave the chemicals behind for you to take to the HHW facility.
